I wish it was only sometimes. With my feet, what generally happens is that almost nothing fits, so when I find something that does, I keep buying it until either they stop making that style, or either the shoe shape (the last they use) or my foot shape changes enough that it stops fitting.
For several years, my shoe shopping consisted of walking into a New Balance store, pointing at my feet, and saying "I need these in an 8EE" and getting either the same style of shoe, or a close replacement. About ten years ago, that stopped working.
It occurs to me that, if I now taking an 8.5 wide in women's shoes rather than an 8, I might be able to find a men's shoe that fits. The nominal conversion factor is "subtract 1.5," and women's 8 suggests men's 6.5, a size that nobody seems to make.
