Praise then darkness, and creation unfinished

This morning, my supervisor asked if I had a moment, invited me to sit down, and basically offered me a promotion. It would mean being part of the science editorial team, rather than part of his copyediting/proofreading staff. I'd be doing more substantive editing, "the stuff you've already been doing" as Simon put it, by which I think he means paying attention to content and checking for accuracy, and occasionally writing a sentence or three if needed (with someone else deciding whether to use it). I asked whether this would mean being hired directly by Triumph Learning: not right away, but it could lead there. For now, it would still be through the temp agency, but for more money. Alas, I don't know yet how much more money; I gather that he doesn't know, that what happens in a case like this is he tells the agency about the person's new work, the agency bills at a higher rate, and the person gets at least some of that increase.

I accepted. It looks like fun, and more money for the same amount of time. I suspect I may have to start going in slightly earlier, but I can live with that.

Simon told me to expect email from Wendy (the chief science editor, who has been saying very nice things about me for months) in a few days, which will arrange a time for her to tell me more about what this will involve. So nothing changes for a few days. (I already knew they were going to give me all or almost-all science for the next year. I'll miss the math, a little, but I won't miss the English Language Arts stuff at all.)
