Someone at Weather Underground is live-blogging the current (just starting) northeast U.S. snowstorm. In the comments, among the maps and discussions of what models the National Weather Service using, user pegleg666 posted a link to a post-Sandy blog post containing the Cuban poet José Martí's description of the blizzard of 1888 and its aftermath.

We're now in the 18-25" zone (it's shifted dammit) and what we fear is having no power. That would mean no heat at all as we have no fireplace or wood stove. I wish we had the means or even the way to install one for the future, but our -902 house has only one chimney.

Pray we don't lose electricity. There won't be a shelter in walking distance for us.

Oh did I mention the temps of single digits at night? Sigh.
