Unsurprising but still disappointing, the Social Security Administration has denied my disability claim.

For added annoyance, this information came in the form of an email saying "we have made a decision, log in to see it or wait for a letter in the mail." After some trouble logging in I was told to call to get the answer. I then spent about three minutes on the phone, most of it listening to a recording tell me how the process complied with the Paperwork Reduction Act, and that the whole thing would take about two minutes, and wouldn't I like to use their website instead.

So, what I know now is that someone made a medical decision to turn me down, and I will have sixty days to appeal the decision. That is a problem for next week, after I get the letter. *sigh*

It doesn't help that the air quality is unhealthy for sensitive people, which includes me. The alert has been extended from midnight last night until midnight tonight; I woke up coughing at five a.m.

I'm sorry to hear they denied you. They pretty much deny everyone on the first go-round. I hope your appeal goes smoothly!

I'm sorry they made a decision that hurts you.

Here from my Network page [you also know me from [community profile] oldqueersyellatcloud]: I was denied three times. After the third time I got a lawyer and went to court and I won, but it was two years of appeals hell. Almost everyone I know who's on disability, especially for invisible disabilities [meaning: not blind, not a wheelchair user] has been denied at least twice. I'm sorry you got denied, but I would definitely recommend** appealing. Also, let me scream in the government's general direction.

I hope the air quality improves soon, too.

**Unsolicited advice, for which I apologize, I know this is none of my business.

Ugh, how horrible to make you jump through such hoops to find out something so disappointing!

The website/phone loop is always awful. I'm sorry that the first round didn't go as hoped - it's also my understanding that the majority of disability applications are rejected on the first round, so hopefully the appeal nets you something more concrete. Fingers and toes are crossed for you!

Wishing you all the best. My understanding is sometimes it takes a couple of appeals to get approved.

I'm sorry you have to deal with this particularly dysfunctional bureaucratic nonsense. Strength to your arm in the next round!

It's a pity that the people who are always wanting to investigate fraud, waste, and abuse in the government's conduct don't go after this kind of nonsense. It's a deliberate policy to deny almost everybody, and it's stupid and evil.

We're getting bad air too, and it really messes with the way that we handle hot weather. I don't start coughing but I do feel light-headed. I hope your skies clear soon.

That's definitely a bouquet of unsurprising-but-still-disappointing-plus-added-annoyance. I'm sorry they handed that to you.

Two jobs ago I was at a law firm that had a Social Security Disability practice. The only applicants who get approved without a denial are people in total kidney failure; everyone else must appeal the denial. Most attorneys work on this for free to the individual (they get paid by Social Security when they win).

Fuck, I'm sorry. They're so cruel about this.

Ugh, it’s like that Grisham story where the insurance company denies everything the first time round. Sorry to hear about the frustration.

I'm not sure about that. It may be that someone made an administrative decision to turn you down. If they didn't ask your doctors about your health, or didn't consult anyone with medical expertise? If their reasoning is just that they can save money by only investigating the cases where applicants appeal? That's not a medical decision.
