About the retail job: I checked off one of the "apply for it" options, but with the rider that, the minute you suspect it's going to start eating your soul, you quit.
On the retail job, I clicked 'no, it will eat your soul', but I add the rider "unless you are selling products that you really believe in": I enjoyed working in a charity shop, but the money was the same as 'JobSeekers Allowance' would have been. A used bookstore would be OK too :-)
And with the chocolate ... yes, but only if it is worthy: Fairtrade, organic, shade-grown or otherwise better for the farmers than regular slavery-and-pesticide-grown.
I'll echo the suggestion that retail should be caveated with selling something you believe in. Bookstore would probably be a good match for you, frinstance. Maybe pet supplies. Exercise equipment. Not makeup.
Color on the hair depends on the reason for coloring it. If it's to perk you up, go for a color you're going to love seeing. If it's to improve job prospects, stick to ones that occur in nature. On people.
OK, entirely gratuitous advice because I simply can not resist polls. And all I've done is advise you to do as I would, which is worth what it's worth.
Purple hair, yay, cos purple my favourite colour, and because purple hair suits you in your icon where you have purple hair.
Retail job: yes, cos I'd do retail in order to have money for treats. That's not really an indication of how much you'd hate it, though. Definitely if it eats your soul it's not worth the money.
And I'll always vote for chocolate (I'm so glad you didn't provide the option to vote against it...)
If you are uncertain about whether or not to dye your hair, I believe you should not. Drastic changes in hair color is something one should only do if one feels strongly about it.
As for the retail job...having extra money is a good thing. Getting out of the house on a regular basis may or may not be a good thing. But "you'll either quit or be fired for exhaustion and clumsiness," does not strike me as a reason to avoid applying for a job without emotional investment. If you need money and a reason to get out of the house, now, you should take the job. If the store needs help, now, they should hire you. 6 weeks from now, you can decide you don't like it after all, or that it's too tiring. Or the store can decide they don't need as much help, so they fire everyone who isn't devoted and incredibly efficient. *shrug* You're still ahead by some wages, some getting out of the house, and maybe whatever you bought with a store discount.
Your soul seems a lot more durable than anything I've ever seen in a retail store, but you know it a lot better than I do. I agree with previous posters who recommend applying at the sort of store you can respect.
i chose supermarket delicatessen counter over unemployement benefit about 14 months ago, and i think that was the right decision. i lasted a whole month..!
From someone who works with the general public daily - avoid it like the plague! While a few customers are nice, most are nasty and abusive. They take thier hostility towards life out on you. My soul is barely alive, and I love the ethics of my job.
There's a lot to be said for getting out of the house. I would recommend working in an office. When I have been unemployed for long stretches I've done volunteer work that's been really rewarding - in psychiatric hospitals, women's shelters etc. The people you are working with there are not the spoiled 'general public.' In fact, I'm starting up with a homeless shelter "B.J.'s Place' soon.
And I just dyed my hair auburn. I've had interesting feedback - men think I looked better as a blonde and women think I look better with the darker hair. I think I looked sexier as a blonde but the darker hait suits my skin tone better.
I didn't take the poll, because I am of two minds. Or heads.
There's the part of me which thinks all hair should be purple as often as it wants to. This is the head that has often been purple and misses it often. It wants to know what shade your neighbor was asking about, and recommends a deep violet purple, if possible, with the caveat that those kinds of purple are often more permanent than you might wish. That part is doing the dance of purple encouragement.
Then there's the part that is currently infatuated with the possibilities of non-reddish henna on white hairs. It wants me to tell you that your hair will be silky and strong and thankful, and that the wonderful effect of your natural grey streaks will still be there, and that those are better than artificial streaks people pay a lot for. This is the head that is currently wearing just those blond highlights, and is pretty happy about them.
Of course next week, there will only be the one head, the black haired one of winter and contrast with pale skin. And it will be all taken with the delights of being able to wear red-red lipstick.
As for the job, if you find one you can respect, and can stand to loose a little respect for, and promise to save your soul from if it starts to feel as if it's going to kill it even just somewhat, then yes, sure. I could see you being good at retail, and maybe even getting pleasure out of it, if it were somewhere you might be helpful to people.
And chocolate: I think I saw some in the store, with cognac. Have to go now.
