Vin Scelsa is talking about Scott Muni's death--and about when Muni, and Vin, and everyone else who'd made that station were fired from WNEW-FM in 1998. They didn't all go at once, and Vin is playing the "Idiot's Delight" show he did as a sort-of eulogy for Muni back then.

I would not have expected to tear up at hearing "Rock lives...The following program is brought to you as a public service by WNEW, 102.7 FM" before Vin's standard quote about respecting the elders, embracing the new, and encouraging the impractical. But, well, that station helped me get through high school.

And then I'd stopped listening, sometime after I moved back to the city in 1986. I wasn't listening to music on the air much at all, through the Nineties.

Ah, hell... that's making me tear up.

Back in the late 1970s, the early morning dj used to play the live version of "Captain Saint Lucifer" (from the Season of Lights album) every morning at 4:45. I had my clock-radio alarm set for 4:43, to make sure I wouldn't miss it. That's part of what helped me make it through those years.

(And damn. I only have that album on vinyl, and both turntables are broken.)
