A couple of photos of my new peacock-embroidered hoodie. They're better photos of the garment than of me.

I got this from UnusualFrequency, on Etsy -- which I mentioned when i got the first one, but Liz had to shut the shop down for a while in between.

I went for a walk this afternoon, because getting outside in the daylight is good for me, especially on bright sunny days like this afternoon. I saw this cherry tree two blocks from home:

I live in an inner suburb of Boston, and wasn't expecting to see flowers other than some vagrant dandelions.

ETA: I am reliably informed that this looks like a winter-flowering cherry, and they're supposed to do that.

I got this fine hoodie from an online acquaintance. Also, I just re-colored my hair.

I'd been idly wanting a new hoodie for months, and then I saw these. Liz has an Etsy store with this and a wide variety of other embroidered clothing, bags, and such. A lot of it is fantasy or sf-themed:

There was a pretty good crowd on Boston Common; we got there early enough to be near the front, so I didn't get a good look at the crowd, but we sounded pretty loud. I got [personal profile] cattitude to take a photo of me while it was still light out:

Thanks to [personal profile] miss_s_b linking to a post about how to create good alt tags for images, I just went back and looked at images on my old posts. It turns out that I had omitted alt tags altogether on a lot of image posts. I am working my way back in time, adding alt tags where I had none, and fixing the occasional useless "alt tag" supplied by Flickr or LJ that is just the image title or, worse, dimensions. (The Flickr photos have titles like "climbing out" or "shining," and what's wanted for an alt tag is something like "four turtles sitting on a log, and one climbing out of the water onto the log.")

I got back as far as mid-2013 on the "show earlier posts" feature of Dreamwidth, and then started clicking on likely tags, including "photo," "birds," and "park." That was fun, looking at photos I took years ago, and being reminded of things I'd forgotten. Along with fixes to old journal entries, I added two entries from 2005 to my birding life list. (I'd posted to LJ about them, and forgotten to write them down in the book when I got back to New York.)

I got my hair dyed purple yesterday, at Scream on Capitol Hill in Seattle.

I'm pleased: it's a really good purple, and she kept a white streak in front, as I asked.

Here's a photo:

a woman with purple and white hair.

The dark blue highlights don't seem to have worked, but it will be interesting if that changes as the dye fades. Also, I have bits of purple under my fingernails, which I don't like but am not surprised by. (ETA: The salon has a website at http://screamseattle.com/ and takes both reservations and walk-ins.)
ETA again: the woman who did my hair is named Kaylee (noting this before I forget again, because I may want to ask for her next time).

Today was the last Bellevue Farmers' Market of the year. It's clearly the end of the season, but we have tomatoes, Brussels sprouts (which I don't like, but Adrian and Cattitude both do), cheese, bread, and mixed-berry pie. I do miss the year-round Greenmarket back in Inwood; there are a few year-round markets in Seattle, but it's different when it's a half-hour bus trip with a walk at each end, rather than a few blocks on foot.

I have uploaded a few photos from our trip to Olallie State Park last month; they were taken in an area that might or might not fit the definition of rain forest, but felt and looked like the Hoh rain forest (on the Olympic peninsula):
tree moss and ferns growing out of a tree trunk.

If you like pictures of ferns, there are three more on my Flickr page (as well as a larger version of this).

I just went wandering around the neighborhood, and took pictures of some of the things in flower. I think this might be an ornamental cherry. I've also posted pictures of two flowering shrubs I can't name—one yellow, one pink—rosemary, and a periwinkle to Flickr. The dandelion photo wasn't worth posting, and I didn't take pictures of the heather or the hellebore.Via Flickr:Some kind of early ornamental cherry?

I'm not sure which is more of an anomaly, the rhododendrons in bloom or the morning's snowfall:

ETA: I am reliably informed that these are camellias, and a google image search agrees. I still like the contrast of flowers and snow.
I had finished lunch today (at an indifferent Chinese restaurant) and noticed sunshine outside. So I quickly paid and went outside to find a sunny spot to stand in while it lasted. This being downtown Bellevue, the first bright spot I noticed when I got outside was a reflection off a tall building, but there was enough direct sunlight to cast nice sharp shadows. I walked over to the sidewalk, south a little, and took this photo with my phone camera:

palm tree silhouetted against a mostly cloudy sky.

Not a particularly great photo, but this is really not what I expected from the Pacific Northwest, three days before the winter solstice.

There's a nice vertical garden on the wall of the Bellevue Library's new parking garage. It's mostly shades and textures of green, with some flowers tucked in. I took some photos, which aren't nearly as good as looking at the real thing, but I think this one gives the general idea:

a variety of green plants growing on one wall of the Bellevue library.

I took a bunch of photos in the park this morning. Here's one; the other eight are at my Flickr page (I'm rosvicl there; redbird was taken). Trees, snow, water, and fences, with a bit of playing with perspective and contrast.

My right shoulder has been bothering me again lately. I don't know if it's the rotator cuff again, or something else. My current plan is to be diligent about my stretches and exercises for the rotator cuff for the next ten days, and then decide whether to call my GP. (Getting in before Thanksgiving, given that it's not remotely an emergency and we're traveling Wednesday, seems unlikely.) Doing the strengthening exercises today, I found three went very smoothly, and the fourth caused an immediate "ouch" in a way that suggested I'd hit the relevant muscle, or a relevant muscle. However, that felt more like upper arm than shoulder, so there may be two things going on, or I may just have pushed things at the gym yesterday.

I have uploaded some more photos to Flickr: autumn in the park, two weird vegetables, and one picture of Julian. Here's one sample: a bush growing on the edge of a steep hill, with bright red leaves

When I was buying a piece of fish at the Greenmarket today, the vendor warned me that they won't be there next Saturday. I told her I wouldn't either, but thanked her for the warning. A bit of chat about plans led to her asking me "What's in Boston, your children?" I said "No, my girlfriend," and smiled. I not only look old enough to have grown children, I am that old, but it still surprised me.

We get the college alumni magazine (it would take an active effort not to), so it goes in the stack of "things to read in the bathroom" along with Science, the Nature Conservancy magazine, and occasional catalogs. I tend to do a really fast skim of the "class notes," and was thus reminded that my class's 25th reunion is next spring. If it weren't Wiscon weekend, I might think about going, though I'd probably decide against it: I haven't either kept in touch with, or missed, those people. The key point is the second half of that, I think.

[livejournal.com profile] cattitude has been buying hummus as a snack lately, and he is working his way through the flavors available at the nearest grocery. The garlic doesn't have enough garlic in it, and the pine nuts weren't noticeable in the pine nut flavored hummus, but the roasted pepper is nice. (The brand name is Sabra; this is not a global opinion of garlic hummus.)

[personal profile] cattitude and I got up fairly early (well, by Sunday standards, which is to say before 8 a.m.) and headed to the zoo a little after ten. Getting there early was nice, because it meant fewer crowds. We didn't try to see everything: just the sea lions, a few minutes someone showing off birds of prey, Madagascar, the Congo, giraffes, and the butterfly garden. One of the butterflies landed on my hand and stayed a minute or so, which is always nice. We also saw a few other birds that were on our way, like the flamingoes. On the way out, having decided to skip Tiger Mountain to save energy, we saw a sign that it is closed indefinitely because of storm damage. So, less than we might have wanted, but we had fun, and got some good photos. (No, my camera doesn't have a manual focus, but I had better angles and got a few reasonable pictures of the okapis.)

Also, having tried putting my new boots on early in the day, I am hopeful: I walked around the apartment a little, and wore them for about 3/4 of an hour, mostly while sitting and playing Scrabble.

I've posted some zoo photos, and a few from the park, to Flickr (rosvicl). Two crested couas, one butterfly, and two okapis: )
